The Story of Dutchess May
by Keleigh May on January 7th, 2015

I had intended to write today a scrumptious Sweet Potato Bisque Recipe, but yesterday my most beloved kitty Dutchess passed away. So, instead here is my tribute to, in my humble opinion, the most amazing kitty that has ever lived.

The Story of Dutchess May

I got Dutchess May one day,
Because I was lonely and needed a friend to play.
The first cat at the shelter tried to bite me and hiss,
Then they brought out Dutchess and she rolled over and purred in total bliss.
My fat cat has been with me through thick and thin,
We’ve both struggled with weight but our love of food would always win.
She watched as I got married and then had a baby,
She treated him like her own, this sweet little lady.
She adored her some British TV,
As she was the fanciest a cat could be.
Dutchess was loving and kind to everyone she met,
Even those who didn’t like cats, she made smile I bet.
She rolled on her back and exposed her belly you see,
Which made her look like a manatee.
Dutchess loved to sit on a chair in the sun,
But let me tell you, it was rare to see her run.
There’s never been a creature so similar as me,
As my sweet little Dutchee.
It’s funny how we can adopt these little creatures not knowing that they will be
A most important part of our family.
Last week we found out my little girl was sick,
Her time was limited, and it was something her body couldn’t kick.
We spent the week cuddled up watching her favorite shows,
But it was still hard for me to let go.
Yesterday I tried to give her fancy tuna, which was her favorite treat,
But my little girl refused to eat.
In her eyes I could tell she was ready to go,
My heart was breaking and I wanted to say no.
But I fully believe that my sweet girl is now in heaven eating a feast,
And I know that she is finally at peace.
Even though my heart is breaking now, I am so thankful that she was in my life,
For she taught me how to be a better mom and wife.
My kitty gave me unconditional love
And I know that she was most beloved.

So to Dutchess May, thank you for loving me even when I didn’t deserve it.
Even though I’m devastated you’re gone, having you was so worth it.
I’ll miss you my sweet Dutchee girl, but Ill see you again,
Thank you for being the sweetest of kitty friends.
