Review of Veri Organic Soda
by Keleigh May on April 16th, 2015

The Veri Soda Company was founded in 2012 by Leonard Freeke and Zeger Van Hovell from the Netherlands. After successfully launching a soda line in Europe, they decided to move their operations to the United States.  According to their website, "Remember a time when soda wasn't a four-letter word? Before corn syrup replaced cane sugar and chemicals became “acceptable” substitutes for real ingredients? Those were the days when soda was a more innocent treat.  We do. And we’ve spent years crafting a soda that’s like no other; one that we could proudly serve to anyone, even our children, guilt-free."  Made with no artificial colors, flavors or sweeteners, Veri Soda offers a low-calorie, completely organic soda that you can enjoy with no guilt.  At only 60 calories per can, you can enjoy one of their four flavors which include Orange, Cola, Lemon Lime and Ginger Ale.  (More flavors are on the horizon!)

An Organic Soda Worth Trying

Veri Soda is the perfect go between for a full-sugar soda and the average diet drink.  A quick glance at the ingredients label of any mainstream soda will reveal there is nothing natural about them.  When you look at the ingredients list on a can of Veri Soda, you will see all organic, all non-GMO ingredients!  Joe preferred the Orange Flavor because, as he says, it tasted just like the traditional orange soda's on the market (Sunkist).  My favorite "mixed drink" is a Roy Rogers or a Shirley Temple". Using Veri, I enjoyed the Cola and Lemon Lime Veri Soda mixed with some Homemade Grenadine.  Random history note, did you know that grenadine originated using pomegranate juice, sugar and water? In fact the name grenadine originated from the French word grenade which means pomegranate. Personally, I treat soft drinks as a dessert, so I would like to see an all-sugar (no stevia) soda as I feel that that is missing from the market. However, Veri Soda gives you the sweetness that you crave along with the bubbly carbonation, but with half the calories of the typical soda.  If you're looking for an organic, non-diet soda, you need to try Veri Soda, because where there's a meal (or a drink), there's a way!

Adding a Little Twist

Homemade Grenadine
  • 1 cup pomegranate juice, no sugar added
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 to 3 drops orange-flower water

Heat pomegranate juice in a small saucepan over medium heat until steam rises from the surface and a few bubbles have formed around the perimeter of the pan, about 5 minutes.  (Do Not Boil) Remove from Heat.

Add sugar and stir until it has dissolved and the liquid is no longer cloudy, about 5 minutes.

Stir in lemon juice and orange-flower water (luckily I had some left over Orange-Flower Water from my Throwback Thursday on Apple Pastries) and let the syrup cool to room temperature, about 40 minutes.  Transfer to a container with a tightfitting lid and refrigerate for up to 1 month.
