The Unathletic Person's Guide to Protein
by Keleigh May on June 10th, 2015

Honestly, before I attended the Garden of Life Blogger Summit last month, I had never once considered taking a protein supplement.  I mean, aren't those for hard core, ripped body builder type people, or at least those that have a gym membership.  I am neither!  After attending the summit, I have learned that there are three main reasons why people should supplement their diet with a protein supplement, and they are as follows....
Athletics - Protein is crucial for the building and repair of tissues (muscles), therefore making it the perfect companion for athletes.  Protein supports muscle mass, which, in turn, boosts metabolism, helping you burn calories longer.

*Those are my legs on the left.....needless to say I am no athlete.
For Energy - Many people rely on their morning cup of coffee to get going each day.  Well, did you know that protein and fiber are a winning combo, since protein gives you energy and fiber helps make the energy last.

*I prefer tea over coffee, as seen here in my prize winning Downton Abby costume for Tea in the Garden at Garden of Life headquarters.
Meal Replacement - What if I told you, you could have a complete meal, "cooked", consumed and cleaned up in under 120 seconds, meaning you could hit that snooze button one more time in the morning.  Ding Ding, now you have my attention!  Protein slows the rapid rise and fall of your blood sugar, thus reducing your appetite, allowing you to feel fuller longer.   Protein also lowers ghrelin, the hormone that stimulates hunger, so you don't feel hungry.  Now you have me proteins....I am intrigued.

* In theory it should only take 120 seconds, if you fully close your blender bottle lid, which I did not. But still total time was less than 5 minutes (including cleanup).

What Is The Right Protein For You?

There are several protein supplements out their, but Garden of Life features protein powders that are organic and non-GMO certified.  Of the more than 26,000 supplement products in the market, only 1400 are certified USDA Organic, only 765 on Non-GMO Project Verified, and only 265 are both!  Garden of Life has 72 of the 265 dual-certified products, thus making it the best of the best.  Garden of Life has four different types of proteins.  RAW Protein, RAW Meal, RAW Fit and Organic Plant Protein, or OPP as its called.  (Apparently there is a song about OPP, but I know nothing about it.)  Garden of Life put together this handy-dandy chart to break down the benefits of each protein.

What Are The May's Favorites?

Joe (fresh off a run and looking super hard core) likes the Organic Plant Protein (OPP), not only because he taught me about the song?? but because the texture is smooth and tastes more like a traditional "shake" that he is used to.  His favorite flavor was the Vanilla.
Another fan of the OPP is Tucker.  The OPP contains no artificial or chemical ingredients.  In fact, it contains 19 naturally occurring vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids.  It is grain-free and gluten-free, thus making it the best option for kids, plus they are the smoothest tasting!  Tucker thinks he is just getting chocolate milk.  Little does he know he is eating 7 organic plant proteins.
The RAW Energy, Yerba Mate has been my personal favorite, as I have taste tested nearly ALL of them.  I tried the RAW Meal, but that one left me feeling TOO FULL - thats right, the protein shake left me feeling TOO FULL!  The RAW Energy gives me the perfect boost in the morning without making me feel stuffed.  Plus, I like the slight coffee taste of the Yerba Mate, which I honestly have no idea what it is?!?

So How Does It Taste?

Sherri Gunn, who personally developed each and every flavor in each protein, wanted each flavor to taste the best under the worst of circumstances.  Meaning, if all you have to mix your powder with is room temperature water, its still going to taste good!  I personally, more often than not, use the refrigerator water to mix mine with, and I have no complaints.  Looking for a way to take it to the next level?  Here is a recipe for a tropical twist using the organic plant based protein.

Give Your Protein a Tropical Twist!

Tropical Protein Treat
  • 1 scoop or a 1 ounce packet of Vanilla Organic Plant Protein
  • 8 oz. orange juice
  • 1/4 cup coconut water
  • 1/2 cup frozen pineapple
  • 4-6 frozen cherries
*Optional- For an extra citrus twist add 1/2 tablespoon frozen orange juice concentrate.
Directions:

Combine all ingredients together until smooth.

In Conclusion....

So what have we learned today students? Well, basically everyone-athletic or not, morning zombie or early bird, rushed to get out the door, or have all the time in the world, everyone needs protein. If you have 120 seconds, thanks to the variety of Garden of Life protein supplements, where there's a meal, there's a way!
