Natural Foods Expo East!

Last weekend, this little food blogger had the privilege of attending her first ever Natural Foods Expo in Baltimore, Maryland that featured over 1,350 exhibitors in the organic and natural food market.
Here is what me and my personal relations assistant (my lovely mother, Kim) observed to be the Top Trends of 2015.

Move over Coconut, there are New and Healthy Waters!

Maple Water- So what is Maple Water? According to Vertical Water, "It’s simply the delicious water that maple trees filter naturally, sweeten lightly and fortify with their own nutrients. Maple water, or maple sap, is the raw material for maple syrup, which is made by boiling down maple water for hours and hours. You might say that maple syrup is maple water concentrate."
I find Maple Water way tastier than Coconut Water!
Maple Water- Happy Tree was one of the Maple Water companies we sampled. Maple Water offers healthy hydration with half the calories of coconut water. It is nutrient rich with B vitamins, and electrolytes and other minerals for natural energy and hydration throughout the day.
Happy Tree also offers a lemon flavor, making it a delicious alternative to lemonade.
Watermelon Water- Each bottle of WTR MLN WTR has a pound of fresh watermelon cold pressed into each bottle. Eating a watermelon just got way more convenient, less messy and portable! If you like watermelon, you will LOVE this!
Sapp Water is made from organic birch tree water. Säpp Organic Birch Tree Water is an all natural, low calorie drink to enjoy on any occasion (less than 10 calories per bottle). Rich in manganese (five times the amount of a cup of kale), which helps prevent stress, supports daily metabolism and blood pressure. Sapp comes in 3 varieties Original (my favorite), along with Nettle and Rosehip infusions.

Paleo: not just for cavemen anymore

Eating Evolved chocolates are made with organic, Fair-Trade certified cacao, single-Origin cacao ethically sourced from the Dominican Republic, lightly sweetened with organic and unrefined coconut sugar, gluten, dairy and soy-free. Each bar contains at least 72% cacao. Flavors include nutrient dense, sustainably sourced ingredients and are crafted in small batches in New York. The Dark Chocolate Mint Creme was AMAZING-think a clean peppermint pattie.
Fat Face Skin Care We've learned that "if you wouldn't EAT something, then you shouldn't put it on your skin!" - Cassy, Founder of Fat Face and Leader in Paleo Skin Care Products.  "FATFACE Skincare specialize in making Organic, Natural, REAL skin care products that aren't full of preservatives, chemicals & toxins. We believe in using healthy fats to nourish our skin instead of dry it out! We use plant based fats like organic coconut oil and raw shea butter, as well as tallow from pastured, grass-fed cows.  Remember, FAT is your FRIEND!"
The New Primal "We believe in a promise to produce high quality primal foods, free of chemicals and preservatives, eating like our ancestors did – hunters and gatherers."  Founder and CEO, Jason Burke still believes that you are what you eat, and The New Primal line of Jerky will surely help you improve your health, even if its just a snack.
Protein was definitely a buzz word at the show, and The New Primal is protein in its "primal" form!
Paleo Passion Pops aims to deliver all-natural foods that don’t contain added cane or refined sugars, artificial flavorings, colorings or artificial sweetener. "The all-natural ice pop uses wholesome fruit and vegetables to provide a sweet, refreshing and healthy snack."
I tried these and have to say they were delicious, the veggies were hidden nicely just leaving a sweet, fruity popsicle taste!
Paleo Scavenger "You deserve tasty snacks that are filled with healthy ingredients you need for your lifestyle! That's why our products are handcrafted, all natural and made from simple ingredients with no fillers or added sugars." Paleo Scavenger granola is soft and chewy in texture and Certified Paleo.
This was my favorite granola I tasted (Paleo or not)!
Please excuse my horrible face in this photo...clearly I was having a moment in the midst of such amazing food.

Gut Health

Reeds Kombucha "Our live raw organic Kombucha uses the finest Oolong and Yerba Mate teas brewed in spring water and proprietary culture to create a delicious beverage of healthful beneficial enzymes, probiotics and organic acids that detoxify, energize and balance with nutrition your body craves. "  Kombucha is a variety of fermented black or green tea drinks that are commonly used as functional beverages for their unsubstantiated health benefits.
KeVita "KeVita is the nation’s leading refreshingly effervescent Functional Probiotic Beverage brand, crafting three vibrant lines—refreshing and revitalizing KeVita Sparkling Probiotic Drinks; invigorating KeVita Tonics; and naturally energizing Master Brew Kombucha—giving consumers over two dozen convenient, flavorful ways to define their own Culture of inner goodness."  KeVita's mission is " empower people to take their health and well-being into their own hands by providing innovative products geared to help support immune and digestive health."
buchi Founders Sarah Schomber and Jeannine Buscher started brewing kombucha so their families could have a healthy alternative to high fructose corn syrup beverages and caffeine laden energy drinks.  Based out of Asheville, NC, buchi kombucha aims to "return to wholesome, regionally produced foods that nourish our bodies, our community, and our local economy."
Buchi Apple Lime is my personal favorite kombucha ever (although Tucker thinks it is "Worcestershire Sauce Drink).
BAO Cultured offers several products including cultured and unpasteurized organic local vegetables using a 7000-year old method of fermentation.  They instill all of their products with probiotics that are proven to aid in digestion.

Savory Snack Bars

Wilde Bars begin with premium lean meat from animals that were raised without growth hormones or antibiotics. Each small batch of gluten-free, whole food bars is balanced with ancient grains, seeds, super fruits and/or veggies; all slow-baked to perfection with some Wilde herbs and spices.
mediterra has created a line of all-natural nutrition bars inspired by the Mediterranean Diet. Their bars are excellent sources of sustained energy and overall wellness.  Loaded with fiber, nutrients and vitamins instead of complex sugars, and saturated fats, the bars will fundamentally change your idea of the snack bar.

As you can see these were so tasty, they didn't even make it all the way home.
Exo Made With Cricket Flour I know, I know...crickets!  Crickets are a complete protein source, containing all the essential amino acids and more iron than spinach.  Two Brown University students, Greg and Gabi, believe that insect protein has an awesome role to play in the future of our food and now they are working to convince the rest of the world. This bar actually falls into 2 "Trends" as it is also Paleo!

My Treasures from ExpoEast!

Basically, ExpoEast is like Christmas for Food Bloggers like myself. I was able to meet the people behind some of my favorite brands, and discover new and exciting ones. I have so much more to share with you, such as my personal favorite products! I am in Foodie heaven and with such an abundance of amazing food I can't wait to show you that where there's a meal, there's a way!
