It's early in the morning, you HAVE to get out of bed and get moving, but you just are not a coffee person.  Wouldn't it be nice if a refreshing cup of hot tea had as much caffeine as a typical cup of coffee?  Is that possible?  With Zest Tea, IT IS!!!  When founders, Rickey and James, went looking for a highly caffeinated tea, they came up empty handed.  Rather than calling it quits, they grabbed a mug and went to the drawing board!  The self-professed "tea-heads" knew how to brew a good cup of tea, they just had to infuse them with caffeine.  After some crowdfunding, they launched their first product in January of 2014.
This year at Expo East I stumbled upon Zest Tea and was immediately intrigued.  Tea with as much caffeine as a cup of coffee?  I had never heard of such a thing, but y'all, this stuff is amazing!  If you have followed my blog for a while, then you know a favorite drink of mine when I am not feeling so well is Sick Tea.  The idea struck me, why don't I try a version of it, but now with Zest Tea.  About ten minutes later, I was feeling "Zesty" and went on a tear, cleaning the house from the floor to the ceiling.  This stuff really works!  My flavor of choice?  Cinnamon Apple Black!  According to their website, "We looked to American icons when creating this blend and what’s more American than Apple Pie? Unfortunately, football and the Grand Canyon didn’t make for great teas. This blend of premium Orange Pekoe black tea smothered in real bits of apple and cinnamon is a nod to your grandmother’s 4th of July specialty."  They got this American Icon right!

How to Make a Sick "Zest" Tea

Whether you're a self-proclaimed "tea-head", or want an alternative to your morning cup of joe, with the help of Zest Tea, where there's a meal (or tea), there's a way!

We visit Oriental Trading's website and Tucker helps me. This year we selected whoopee cushions, whistles and sticky glow in the dark eye balls.  Best thing about ordering toys- what you don't give away can be packed up and given out next year! So there you have it folks! Want to stay clean this Halloween all while keeping the Trick or Treaters happy?

Paleo- A-Go-Go

Paleo was a HUGE trend at this year's show. Without further ado, here are some our favorite paleo products.
(P.S. even if aren't Paleo- I think you will still enjoy these products!)
Ello Raw

One of my first stops at the Expo was at the Raleigh based booth for Ello Raw. Ello Raw offers handcrafted, small batch, bite sized treats free of chemicals, fillers, gluten, eggs, soy, dairy and agave. Ello Raw comes in 3 yummy flavors (Coconut Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Cinnamon Sugar Donut and Paleo flavor- Goji Cacao Brownie). Ello Raw puts health before profit, because they believe all people deserve REAL food (preach). To find where you can purchase Ello Raw and to learn more click here.
Primal Kitchen Avocado Oil

Primal Kitchen offers an entire line of Paleo condiments, from proteins and bars, to salad dressings and mayo. My personal favorite is their Avocado Oil. Avocado oil has a mild taste (more mild that olive oil) and a high smoke point- making it perfect for everything from homemade salad dressings to frying and sautéing. Rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, and packed with monounsaturated oleic acid, it is a great addition to any kitchen. Click here to discover more of Primal Kitchen's products and also to see where you can pick some up  for yourself.
Bob's Red Mill Paleo Baking Flour

Bob has done it again folks! Paleo baking flour contains 4 ingredients (almond flour, arrowroot starch, coconut flour and tapioca flour) and makes it easy to create muffins, crackers and more! This flour has the smooth consistency of traditional flour while being completely free of gluten and grains. I will be sure to post some recipes featuring Paleo flour in the near future, in the mean time click here to check out all of Bob's Red Mill products.
4505 Chicharrones Fried Pork Rinds

A Paleo approved treat- fried pork skin, and boy did Joe love them. 4505 Meats was built upon the values of whole animal butchery and are committed to bringing you quality and delicious products. The Chicharrones are fried in lard in kettles which produce a lighter & crispier texture but also minimizes waste, in part of their commitment to whole animal utilization and sustainable production. 4505 Chicharrones come in 3 flavors- classic, jalapeño, and BBQ. For more on information on 4505 meats click here
Ancient Nutrition Bone Broth Protein

Bone broth was a big trend at the show this year, but this was the only Bone Broth Protein we saw. Mom (a.k.a my administrative assistant) was fascinated by Ancient Nutrition's Bone Broth Protein.
Bone Broth Protein is a powder shake that contains 20 grams of protein and is free of gluten, dairy and soy. Bone broth contains protein, collagen, gelatin, glucosamine and other nutrients that the body needs to function optimally. With Ancient Nutrition Bone Broth Protein you get all the health benefits of Bone Broth in a convenient, easy to mix powder. Click here to find out more about Ancient Nutrition Bone Broth Protein.
RX Bar

Instead of placing the ingredients on the back in microscopic letters, RX proudly places their ingredients in big bold letters on the front of each and every package. RX Bars come in 9 delightful flavors- Maple Sea Salt, Mint Chocolate, Chocolate Sea Salt, Blueberry, Coconut Chocolate, Peanut Butter, Coffee Chocolate, Apple Cinnamon, and seasonal favorite Pumpkin Spice. RX Bar set out to create a whole food protein bar they felt good about eating and that made them feel great after they ate it. Mission accomplished. RX Bars are available nationwide (and at one of my favorite places: Trader Joe's). Click here to find out more at RX Bars.
Chosen Foods Avocado Oil
Black Garlic Mayo

Sounds weird- tastes amazing. Black garlic (fermented garlic) is believed to have twice the antioxidant levels as fresh. Mixed with paleo approved Avocado Oil Mayo- you have a winning combination in my book. I love pairing this with my Pesto Pepperoni Sandwich, while Joe simply mixes it with tuna for a simple lettuce wrap. Chosen Foods has an entire line of healthy oils, seeds, snacks and condiments. At a time when food is often fast and convenient, Chosen Foods encourage people to slow down. "We want to inspire folks to get in the kitchen and put real food back on the table. We believe the act of cooking and the time spent around the dinner table should be savored." Find out more about Chosen Foods here
Goodness Grainless

These rich chocolate cookies were some of Joe's favorite from the show. Goodness Grainless has an entire grainless bakery in New Jersey, all of which can be delivered right to your front door!  Owner and professional pastry chef Michelle Retik, of Short Hills, NJ, began exclusively cooking with nut flours and local honey in 2012 after experiencing little success with traditional medical treatment for Ulcerative Colitis. Michelle switched to a restrictive dietary regimen that eliminated all grains, refined sugars and most dairy and immediately began experiencing relief in her symptoms. She is now completely symptom free. Word spread of her baked goods and Michelle soon found demand for her specialty pastry treats for others both on and off the restrictive diets. To try goodness grainless for yourself or to find out more information, click here

The Cavemen would be happy.

Paleo Products are here to stay- and that is delightful. I mean seriously- now  you can have pork fried chips on a flatbread with mayo- Paleo people rejoice! Stuck in a paleo rut- test out these new products because where there's a meal there's a way!

Going to the Chapel...

Alright- I am signing off for the rest of the week because this weekend my little sis is getting MARRIED!  When I return be ready for some clean Halloween suggestions and some fun fall treats!

by Keleigh May on September 29th, 2016

When I walked past the delighted by booth at Expo East last week, I was utterly shocked. Dessert?? HUMMUS?? HUH? My first thought was "Ok, locate the trash can so if I need to spit this out I can do so and quickly." I should also mention that I am not a fan of traditional hummus, so count me as doubly suspicious. I took a bite and braced for the worse- but what I tasted was velvety, rich, chocolate goodness. WHAT?! This decadent dessert is made from chick peas?! Mind Blown. I then proceeded to try each and every flavor (Brownie Batter, Snickerdoodle, Orange-Dreamsicle and Vanilla Bean), all of which were all equally delicious as the first.

So what's in Dessert Hummus?

First, I'll start with what's not in it-delighted by dessert hummus is free of gluten, wheat, soy, dairy, eggs and nuts. Only ingredients like, garbanzo beans, organic turbinado sugar, pure vanilla extract, coconut milk, sesame tahini and coconut sugar make it to this delightful treat. How did delighted by dessert hummus come to be? Well, it all stared when founder Makenzie Marzluff started bringing her sweet concoction to parties back in 2014. Makenzie then decided it was time to  "share her glitter with the world" so she quit her job and delighted by was born.

A marriage made in snack heaven.

Though I seriously considered eating this entire container by myself, I decided I would be a really, really kind person and share. But what to serve my delicious dip with? Certainly fresh fruit, pound cake or just a spoon would all be good choices, but mysupercookies seemed to be the superior choice for me (for more on mysupercookies check out my post from yesterday here). Man, oh man, was it amazing.
Random Thought:
Any kid of the 90's will remember Dunkaroo's- well serving these 2 together in the same container would be a much healthier, superior tasting and overall better combo. So please, dessertby and mysupercookies can we make that happen? Our children's lunchboxes (and my stomach) would be eternally grateful. Thank you ever so much.

Think dessert hummus sounds to bizarre to actually be edible? Well check out the video below to find out what my friends and family thought of not only the Brownie Batter Hummus, but the mysupercookies too.

Random fact: I made one my bestest buddies Owen (he's 9- what's 22 years between friends?!) try chips made with cricket flour earlier this week- and he's still a little suspicious of anything I want him to try.
Pardon some of my mumblings in the video- here are the exact ingredients of the dessert hummus. delighted by is expected to be in retailers in the southeast very, very soon- in the mean time, check out more about them here.
Why were we talking about Baobab? It's in mysupercookies!
Random note: The Baobab tree is what Rafiki lives in in the Lion King.
mysupercookies are located at retailers all around the country, to find out more, click here
Think that a vegan, low sugar, super food, delicious dessert is as realistic as a flying mystical unicorn? Well thanks to delighted by and mysupercookies,
where there's a meal, there's a way!

Better Choices

We all have vices- whether that be chips, cookies or my personal downfall, ice cream. Why not make you vices more virtuous with these organic, clean alternatives to some of your favorite treats.  (By the way, that is me and Robyn O'Brien, author of The Unhealthy Truth and crusader for the Organic Food movement- so yea basically my hero.)
Annie's Organic Grabbits

Ya'll, I have been looking for an organic "chocolate sandwich cookie" (you know -rhymes with "shmoreo")  for awhile (especially to make cinder cake) so I literally screeched with excitement when I saw these. Annie's Organic Grabbits are made with no high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, synthetic colors or preservatives. They also have a mint flavor which is very reminiscent of a certain Girl Scout cookie. To find out more about Annie's click here, but in the mean time go ahead and go pick you up a pack- you know you want to .
Hippeas Organic Chickpea Puffs

Are you a chip person (or more specifically a fan of something that rhymes with "shmeetos")? Then Hippeas are for you! Hippeas is a new company and feature organic chickpea puffs that are gluten-free, vegan and have 3 grams of fiber and 4 grams of protein per serving (with only 130 calories). Hippeas come in 6 yummy flavors happenin' hickory, maple haze, pepper power, far out fajita, vegan white cheddar and sriracha sunrise. Click here to find out more about Hippeas.
K'UL Chocolate Bars

First things first, my mom loves, LOVES chocolate and is a bit of a chocolate snob (she may or may not have spit out some in front of some vendors at this very show). In mom's opinion K'UL (pronounced cool) featured the best chocolate of the show- and some of the best she has ever had-ever. That's a pretty bold clam, but when you look at how Peter Kelsey, the man behind K'UL, makes his chocolate it is more understandable. Peter has a farm to bar approach and works directly with farmers from around the world to ensure the quality of beans and also works to improve the lives and environments of those who grow it. "He wants to show the world that real, pure, simple, dark chocolate is not candy, it is food. Peter’s mission is to prove this by creating all-natural, functional chocolate bars made from simple ingredients that are sourced from cacao farms driven by sustainable practices." To find out more about K'UL bars click here (mom's favorite is the 70% single origin, co-op Kafupbo, Haiti).
Brio Ice Cream

I tried several ice cream at this years expo- and a lot of them, while being "healthy alternatives" tasted well, sad- very, very sad. When I walked past Brio I almost kept walking, because I just didn't want to try another "healthy ice cream." But boy, oh boy am I glad I stopped. Brio was founded by the brothers behind Earth's Best Baby Food (what my mama gave me when I was a wee one). After helping grow a generation of healthy, happy babies, the Koss brothers have transformed ice cream into a healthier food with Brio.  Brio is made with organic whole milk from pasture-raised cows, non-GMO ingredients, and is certified gluten-free, rBST-free and contains no artificial colors, flavors or sweeteners. Brio is filled with antioxidants, protein (5 grams per serving) omega 3-6-9s and probiotics, yet it has 35% fewer calories and 50% less fat than super premium ice cream brands. But the most important part- it tastes really decadent, delicious and divine (they worked with two former top flavor developers from Ben & Jerry's- so like I said, good stuff). Check out their website to find out more, but if you are a local to Raleigh check them out at Costco this weekend!
Banza Pasta

I have tried my fair share of bean and gluten free pasta- but none even come close to Banza. Banza holds up to baking (as seen in my baked pumpkin pasta dish) whereas some literally disintegrate. Banza is made from chickpeas and packs a powerful punch-it's gluten free, soy free, non gmo, has a low glycemic index, 25 grams of protein, 13 grams of fiber and half the net carbs as average pasta. If that doesn't convince you to switch over, then the taste certainly will! It tastes almost identical to traditional pasta- come to think of it, no one has ever noticed the difference when I have cooked with it, until that is I point it out and they are pleasantly surprised! This one is an easy swap people! And bonus... Banza has just introduced a new quick and easy boxed mac and cheese (think no junk, better tasting, higher protein, rhymes with "raft" mac and cheese). Fellow moms- this is a weeknight delight! To find Banza at a store near you, click here
Three Jerks Filet Mignon Jerky

I don't like beef jerky- well to be more specific I've never ate it nor have I ever wanted too. That changed when I ran into Three Jerks Jerky. I remembered seeing them on Shark Tank- and the sharks going wild for this stuff- so I had to give it a try. It did not taste like dog treats (what I always imagined jerky to taste like) instead it was smoky, and meaty and not overly tough  or chewy. As soon as I took a bite I was thinking of the ways I could use this stuff in my kitchen- topping on my Loaded Potato-Less Soup , addition to Mac and Cheese (Banza's for instance), sprinkled on my barbecue chicken burgers or you know I suppose you could eat it just out of the bag. Click here to find where you can purchase Three Jerks Jerky and to find out more about them.

Before the show, I asked Tucker if there was anything he wanted to me bring home, or check out for him. His answer, "Pasta and superhero cookies." mysuperfoods supercookies are fun super hero shaped whole grain cookies that are packed with super foods like chia seeds, quinoa, acerola, and baobab, and have a taste that kids (and adults) will love. mysupercookies come in 3 yummy flavors (Honey, Blueberry and Chocolate). They also offer mysupersnacks, which are bite-sized soft and chewy muffins packs with things like oats, fresh fruit, amaranth and flax seeds (available in 3 flavors- Apple Raisin, Blueberry Banana Acai and Chocolate Chip). As you can see, they are a hit in our neck of the woods. To find out more or to find in a store near you, click here

Still Hungry?

Come on back tomorrow to check out what I consider to be the most innovative new product of the Expo- Dessert Hummus (If you missed yesterday's part 1 post you can find it here). Want to eat clean, but really craving some familiar indulgences? Well thanks to these wonderful companies, now you don't have to sacrifice health for taste because,
where there's a meal, there's a way!
